The Men’s Talking Watch can be a practical tool for individuals entering the later middle stages of dementia, mainly if they are accustomed to wearing a watch.

As dementia progresses, the ability to tell time and recognise the date often diminishes, particularly when using an analogue clock.

The Men’s Talking Watch addresses this challenge.

Setting up the watch is straightforward, following the provided, simply written instructions and spoken commands. Once configured, the Men’s Talking Watch can announce the exact time with a single button press. Pressing the button twice provides the date, including the day, month, and year. When voice activation is enabled, the watch announces the time every hour within a user-defined range, and it does not speak overnight unless the button is pressed.

The hourly announcement function may affect users differently. Some may find it helpful for maintaining time awareness, while others may prefer it disabled. This function can be turned off by pressing and holding the talking button for several seconds. Note that turning off the hourly voice feature also disables the time announcement button. To reactivate, press and hold the same button again.

The talk button has two operational modes: with hourly announcements enabled, a short press gives the time between hours; when announcements are disabled, a longer press provides the time, which can then be deactivated with another long press.

The Men’s Talking Watch features a classic design and is comfortable to wear.

It is important to note that the Men’s Talking Watch is neither waterproof nor water-resistant. Users unaccustomed to removing their watch for activities like showering or washing may need to replace it more frequently because they forget to take it off. I nearly did this while testing the watch.

Additionally, the watch does not offer a digital display. While some may find digital watches easier to use, the voice activation function aims to address this need.
